Depending on your desired destination in South America, the ideal time to visit will vary. Scattered across the vast expanse of South America are some of the most extreme landscapes on Earth, from the parched deserts of the Amazon to the lofty Andes. As a result, weather changes tend to be more localized than seasonal.
Although some locations are accessible all year round, others do experience distinct rainy and dry seasons, which are usually not too harsh to discourage tourists.
At any given time, you can find the perfect conditions on the continent to do whatever you want: follow animals, view glaciers, explore ancient sites, or dance the night away. Below you can find our climate guides and suggestions.
When compared to North American winters, the southern hemisphere of South America (including Argentina, Chile, and Patagonia) experiences the polar opposite weather patterns, with the warmest months falling between November and February and the coldest months between June and August. When it comes to seasonal changes, northern South American countries (such as Ecuador, northern Brazil, and Colombia) are more like North America.
South American weather changes are likely to be more localized than seasonal. Seasons become more apparent as one travels south. The temperature drops as you climb higher in the atmosphere. The southernmost parts of the continent, like Patagonia, are best explored in the summer. The best times to visit South America on a budget are during the spring and fall shoulder seasons.
As winter visitors leave, beautiful blooms and young animals emerge, signaling the start of spring. Around this time (June–November), the Amazon Rainforest and Salar de Uyuni are at their driest. There is less crowding on the slopes and at the resorts during the off-season. Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro are less busy in the winter, so it's a good time to visit those cities. While you may embark on a Galapagos cruise at any time of year, the calmest weather and greatest chance of seeing wildlife are in the spring.
From December to February, South American summers last. During this time of year, it gets the wettest and warmest. In Patagonia, summer showers are unusual. Like the rest of South America, Colombia's beaches really come to life in the summer. At the tail end of summer, the world's greatest party, the Rio Carnival, takes over Rio de Janeiro's streets, marking the beginning of carnival season. Adventure cruises in Antarctica are also operating at full capacity throughout the warmer months, indicating peak season.
The cities of South America are most picturesque in the fall, so plan your trip accordingly. A more relaxing vacation is possible when temperatures are lower and there are less people. This time of year is perfect for a Patagonia vacation because lodging is less expensive, the weather is mild (not yet cold), and the peak tourist season has passed. Going on a wine tasting tour in the Mendoza wine region of Argentina in the fall is a fantastic idea.
Extremely cold weather is possible in the southwestern areas of South America from June through August. Machu Picchu, the tourist mecca of South America, is at its most beautiful and serene at this time of year. Now that the rainy season has over, you can perhaps anticipate a gorgeous sky with minimal precipitation. Skiers from throughout the globe go to the Patagonia region in southern Argentina and Chile during these months for the world-class powder skiing. South America experiences its driest season in the winter, accompanied by sharp temperature reductions.
During the height of summer in Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Columbia, many city dwellers take vacations, making it an affordable time to visit major cities. The weather is perfect for exploring the wineries of Uruguay and Columbia, lounging on the coast, or trekking in Patagonia, but you'll need to plan ahead if you want to visit Torres del Paine National Park.

At this festival, Bolivians buy a wide variety of tiny goods to please Ekeko, the deity of abundance in Bolivian households
Much of the earth is still experiencing beautiful summer weather. During this time of year, visitors may enjoy longer days and the birthing of new species in the Falklands. Meanwhile, in the Galapagos, land birds start their peculiar courtship rituals, sea turtles lay their eggs, and the vibrant colors of marine iguanas signal that it is mating season.

Carnival (the week leading up to Lent): Latin American countries all celebrate Carnival, but the most famous ones are in Rio de Janeiro, where samba parades and exciting street parties draw large crowds of tourists.
March is a fantastic month to travel in South America because the crowds start to thin out and hotel prices start to drop a bit. Chile, especially the winelands and Lake District, is stunning in the fall, and you could also visit the beaches of Uruguay, the coffee region of Colombia, or the less crowded trails of Patagonia for some hiking.
Festivals & Events
April is a fantastic month to go hiking in Patagonia or exploring the winelands of Mendoza because the summer heat subsides and the number of tourists drops. During this time, you may go snorkeling in the hottest waters in Uruguay, see sea turtles and land iguanas hatching in the Galapagos, and enjoy hot and dry conditions in Paraguay.
Bolivia and Brazil's Pantanal experience their dry seasons as the Andes rains diminish. Attractions like Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu are less crowded and cheaper in the off season, which makes it a fantastic time to visit. Also, the Esteros de Iberá wetlands in Argentina are best visited around this period because of the abundance of species that can be seen there.

In May or June, Bolivia hosts El Señor del Gran Poder, a festival that attracts more than 20,000 colorfully costumed dancers to the streets of La Paz.
Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador experience their busiest tourist season in June because to the pleasant and dry weather. The Galapagos Islands are at their most spectacular in July, when visitors may witness the mating dance of flightless cormorants and blue-footed boobies as well as the display of the frigatebird's brilliant red clutches. Buenos Aires is more pleasant in the evenings due to the cooler weather, the Argentinean highlands are in the midst of ski season, and Colombia has a brief dry season that is perfect for touring.
With spring weather, mostly blue skies, and rising temperatures, August is a fantastic time to explore Rio de Janeiro and the tropical wetlands of the Pantanal. At the same time, if you want to trek the Inca Trail, you should prepare ahead, even up to a year before you go, because it is high season in Bolivia and Peru.
Festivals & Events
In September, visitors visiting the Península Valdés in Argentina have a good chance of seeing seabirds, whales, seals, penguins, and seals. The Atacama Desert, central valleys in the north, and Santiago are all well worth a visit now that the weather is warming up and the number of tourists is still low.

Now is a great time to visit Patagonia before the summer crowds hit, or to go for a stroll in Argentina's Lake District as the weather warms up and wildflowers bloom all over the region. On Española and Isabela, blue-footed boobies are caring for their young, the winds are calming, and sea lion pups splash around in the water.
The Falkland Islands are most beautiful in the spring because of the longer days, milder weather, and abundance of wildlife that is nesting. Although there are fewer people on the beaches now than in December, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay are preparing for the summer throngs. Booking in advance is highly recommended due to the rising number of visitors visiting Patagonia.
Although December is a popular period in Patagonia, it is also the greatest month to visit if you want warm weather, clear skies, breathtaking views, and beautiful hiking chances. While the season's rains have flooded the rivers and Iguazú Falls is roaring loudly over the cliff edge, good travel conditions in Colombia offer greater visitor numbers and ideal weather for exploring colonial cities and the beaches.
