While on the subject of beach towns, Jacó is definitely the best, especially if you're a part of a wild bachelor party.
Just a handful of spots in San José and the suburbs seem to host the nightlife: Vertigo for the party animals, El Steinvorth for the creative types, and the Del Rey for the lonesome men (and yes, that small-dressed woman smiling at you is probably a prostitute). If you're a repeat customer like me, another option is to bring your hammock and spend the night in the woods, maybe with a bottle of your favorite whisky.
For some reason, karaoke holds a special place in my heart, and the most enjoyable karaoke experience of my life was at El Steinvorth, where I got to belt out my favorite songs to an audience of hundreds. This multi-story San José venue has live music, wild artwork, lovable hipsters, and really strong Long Island iced teas—all of which are sure to get you moving.
The beach resort of Jacó becomes a haven of sleaze and gritty underbelly that is also a fantastic time when the sun goes down. My favorite place to get a huge beer bong and hang out with pals for hours on end is Los Amigos Restaurant and Bar. Just a heads up, Thursday is ladies night.
Your husband may be sleeping with hookers at this San José dive if you receive a photo of him "sport fishing" in Costa Rica. The photo could have been shot using artificial fish and an ocean backdrop. Sex tourists and rubberneckers throng the notoriously prostitution-filled Del Rey. The Colonial Casino across the street is far more respectable if you're just looking for a place to gamble.
Even without hitting the town, I've enjoyed some of my most memorable evenings in Costa Rica. In the isolated woods of the Osa Peninsula, they slept in hammocks hung from trees, around by strange creatures that made both beautiful and terrifying noises. Scary? On occasion. Is it beneficial? Every time. In Corcovado National Park, near the La Sirena Ranger Station, was the best camping experience I've ever had.
