Are an estimated 3.5 to 4 million of them (with 95% residing in southern Peru). Additionally, the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado is committed to providing you with the safest opportunity to contact with the country's de facto national animal.

The five-star hotel in the Sacred Valley keeps several baby alpacas as pets. The nicest thing? You're free to feed them.

I agree with that. Visit the gardens outside El Huerto, the hotel's restaurant, at 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM daily to feed the cute newborn alpacas grass, flowers, herbs, and lactose-free milk.

The Belmond takes in newborn animals from the Andean village of Willoq, which is located 48 miles outside of Cusco. Woven blankets, caps, and sweaters are made from alpaca wool, which is a highly sought-after commodity. Because they are timid by nature, crias need frequent human interaction at the hotel to overcome their fear of humans and prepare for shearing. The Belmond family takes in alpacas for a year before giving them back to the community in return for new babies.

Gandy and Goyo, two gardeners at the Belmond, are in charge of the feedings. Goyo and Gandy, who are in charge of the crias, educate the visitors about them during the activity by telling them their origin stories, favorite foods, and the English translations of their names.

You won't miss an opportunity to spend time with the alpacas if you happen to miss their feedings. Although they are housed in an enclosure behind the pool, you are welcome to spend time with them if you see them wandering the gardens.

Are you still not satisfied with alpacas? On the Lares Trail, which leads to Macchu Picchu, you may expect to encounter plenty of these cuddly friends, as well as llamas and ancient Inca stone structures. Another option is to reserve a room at the "alpaca treehouse" near Atlanta, Georgia, if a global adventure isn't feasible this year.

Dates of travel affect the price of a room at the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado.
